10 Minutes Can Go a Loooonnnngggg way...

As mom's, we always find ways to be more efficient and do more in less time, only to end up doing more in even less time!! All to say, even though 10 minutes may seem like a long time when we have a 24 hour checklist going off in our ear, it can be just enough time to regroup, rejuvenate and return to your family or little one refreshed.

So, here it is, this week's 10 Minute Mommy Timeout:

  1. Pick a realistic time: Of course, during baby's nap time is ideal. It's realistic, believe it or not, to do this while your little one is awake, too. Just don't set yourself up for failure by trying this right when you get home or while you're baby is fussy or needy.

  2. Get your little one situated: 10 minutes is a long time for some little ones depending on how young they are, but giving them this time also instills independence for them. Put your baby under their mobile or in their playpen with a safe toy. Or, how about in their highchair with a healthy snack (one they won't choke on for sure) and turn on Baby Einstein or Sesame Street. 10 minutes of television won't hurt them... I promise.

  3. Run for it: Hee hee. Now's your time to make a run for it. Find a quiet place nearby so that you can hear the baby but far enough that you aren't sitting beside them. The point is for you to have some "me time", remember?

  4. Ambiance:
    • Keep some of your favorite cd's, radio stations, i-pods ready with your favorite relaxing music. This is not the time to play your favorite jam that gets you going in the morning or the song you danced to at your wedding. Play something that will give you clarity or relaxation. It's about you.

    • Light a small candle fragranced with lavendar, eucalyptus or anything aromatic that you prefer.

    • Turn your cell phone, homephone and Blackberry off! How could I forget the most important thing? I know... we're all slaves to our cell phones and Blackberries... don't worry... the messages will all still be there 10 minutes later.

  5. Relax: Pick any one of these things. Pick up a book that will make you laugh or dream a little bit. If you're near a window, just enjoy the picture. You'd be amazed what writing in a journal for 10 minutes can do. And, last but not least, simply close your eyes and put your feet up. Beware... this could put you into a deep sleep... keep an alarm clock nearby. Just kidding, your little one wouldn't dare let that happen, so not to worry!

  6. Return: relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated to spend a little quality time with your little one and your family.

Personally, my goal is to do this at least once per hour - yeah right... I blink and the day has gone but doing this once per day, keeps me sane and my family filled with a little more peace and a little more joy than before.

In light,
